Workshop: Hip Hop Hip Drop
Teacher: Naimah of Ethnophonica
Date/Time: 9:00-10:30am on Saturday, October 6
Cost: $30

Tribal fusion bellydance allows performers to incorporate many different "looks" and "styles" into their own movement vocabulary. In this class, fun, high energy, hip hop choreography is innovately fused with tribal bellydance movements and techniques. It has been described as "Hip Drop Hip Hop!" You can definately rock this unique style at nightclubs, haflas and dance parties!

Inspired by today's diverse urban dance scene, we will perform a tribal fusion style choreography to energizing "dancehall reggae" music. (Look out MTV!) Be prepared to feel the intense rhythms, get sweaty, and release your inner dancehall diva. You know she's in there!

Reggae music has a distinctive, rhythmic sound which offers a unique perspective for tribal fusion dance. It's origins can be traced to traditional African and Caribbean music as well as American rhythm & blues. Dancehall reggae, recently popularized by artists like Sean Paul and Gwen Stefani, is a much faster and more upbeat style than traditional roots reggae. It's heavily influenced by hip hop and characterized by "chatting" (rapid fire Jamaican patois vocals), infectious melodies, and a strong drum & bass beat.

Hip hop dance is a broad genre with many different variations, but in general, the choreography is characterized by its vigorous athletics, body isolations, funky movements, heavy, aggressive style, and concentration on footwork. The musical and cultural diversity of hip hop naturally encourages fusion and innovation in both dance and music - from reggaeton to bhangra and dancehall.

Luckily you don't need an invite from P.Diddy to enjoy hip hop bellydance; the only requirement is a sense of adventure! So tie on your favorite "bling-bling" hip scarf and prepare to infuse some dancehall rhythms and hip hop energy into your bellydancing!
